Videos

The videos on this page were created after the coronavirus pandemic forced the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and most performing arts organizations, to close its doors.  While the ability to perform was halted, I was able to continue teaching remotely.  Giving lessons on line, however, is a compromise.  So, with time now available to me, I thought I could enhance my teaching by filming these three master classes, each emphasizing the ways in which I approach the fundamentals of clarinet playing and musicianship.  I also thought that former students, future students, and clarinet students anywhere, could possibly benefit from some of the content here.  I will hope for that outcome.   The fourth video on this page, the Premiere Rhapsodie by Claude Debussy, was a filmed performance, without audience, at PNC Recital Hall on the campus of Duquesne University.  The pianist is my friend and colleague, David Allen Wehr.  This performance was supposed to be given in the fall of 2020, as part of the Music on the Bluff concert series. 

 

Los videos en esta página fueron creados después de que la pandemia del coronavirus forzara a la Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, así como a la mayoría de organizaciones artísticas en general, a cerrar sus puertas.  Si bien la habilidad para tocar en vivo se detuvo, pude continuar enseñando en forma remota.  Dando lecciones así, es, sin embargo, un compromiso.  Así, con tiempo ahora disponible, pensé que podría suplementar mi enseñanza filmando estas tres clases magistrales, cada una enfatizando la forma en que abordo las técnicas fundamentales del clarinete y la interpretación musical.  Pensé también que antiguos alumnos, futuros alumnos y estudiantes de clarinete en cualquier lugar, podrían beneficiarse de algo de este contenido.  Así lo espero.  El cuarto video en esta página, Premiere Rhapsodie de Claude Debussy, fue una interpretación filmada en vivo, sin público, en el PNC Recital Hall de Duquesne University.  El pianista es mi amigo y colega, David Allen Wehr.  Nuestra presentación habría sido parte de la serie Music on the Bluff en el otoño del 2020

Using the distinct sections of Weber’s Concertino as a template, this class highlights the fundamentals of clarinet playing - embouchure, tone, articulation, hand position, air production - and my approach to teaching each of those. Additionally, this class emphasizes the ways in which musicianship – phrasing, character, emotion – blend together with those clarinet fundamentals. Usando las distintas secciones del Concertino de Weber como plantilla, esta clase destaca los fundamentos de la interpretación del clarinete - embocadura, tono, articulación, posición de la mano, producción de aire - y mi enfoque para enseñar cada uno de ellos.
